CONSERVATION WORK

Our conservation approach is always ‘taylor-made’ to fit each project, never ‘off the shelf’. Every project, material, environment and condition is unique and therefore a crucial part of any project is the identification of the most suitable conservation techniques starting with small-scale trials. The list below identifies the key techniques that we use, however we take a pragmatic approach to the work and adapt to each project:

Our conservation approach is always ‘taylor-made’ to fit each project
  • Treatment of cracks:
  • Re-modeling and re-carving missing elements
  • Masonry structures: conservation, cleaning, dismantling, relocation, storing, reconstruction
  • Masonry stabilisation: façades and structures using traditional bonding methods including bond lintels and tie rod systems
  • Stone indents and replacements
  • Removal of salts: mechanical, poulticing and water baths.
  • Surface cleaning technologies:
    • Laser technology using the Phoenix Conservation Laser

    • Electronically controlled intermittent nebula (fine water mist) sprays
    • Poulticing
    • Various chemical applications
    • JOSS vortex (with fine abrasive)
    • DOFF (superheated steam) system
    • Manual cleaning methods
  • Removal of biological growth: mechanical, DOFF (superheated steam) system, biocides (various)
