Repair to Gate Pillar Finial circa 1740
The left side (east) gate pillar finial and plinth, situated in the grounds of Dunninald, was surveyed for the purpose of submitting priced recommendations for their repair and re-instatement. The damage was caused by a tree branch falling on to the stonework during the gale.
The broken stone finial lying at the foot of the left side gate pillar and damaged plinth stones, located on the pillar, were surveyed. The three elements described would be carefully removed and wrapped with impact resistant polythene. Small fragments would each be wrapped with bleach free protective tissue and located in a box.
An aluminium scaffold tower would be erected around the gate pillar extending up to the level of the base to facilitate its careful removal. The base would be lifted from its present position using a lorry mounted cherry picker. The pieces were transported to our Edinburgh workshop for repair.
